Secondary Studies

Can I use your courses to get a graduation diploma?
Yes. If you are not sure which courses you need to graduate, please contact one of our counsellors. To find their contact information please click on the Staff tab on our website.

Are all VLN courses high school equivalent?
Yes. All courses meet the approved British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum leading to the certificate of graduation.

Do post secondary institutions accept the marks I receive from the Vancouver Learning Network?
Yes. VLN courses are accepted throughout Canada and the United States.

Do I need to make an appointment with a counsellor before I select my courses?

The following students must meet with a VLN counsellor before registering for a course:

  1. If you are a student wanting to take a grade 8 and 9 course.
  2. If you are a student under 19 and are not attending a BC high school.
  3. If you are an adult student and are unsure of what you need for graduation.

Students who need only one or two courses, and know what they are, may register without making an appointment with a counsellor. You can register online at vlns.ca.

I am attending high school and want to take some courses at VLN. Can I register at VLN?
Yes. All students in Grades 10-12 can register for courses at those grade levels. Students in Grade 8 or 9 must get permission from their home school by filling out the appropriate registration form available on our web site. Because home schools must pay for this course directly to us, they have no obligation to do this if the course you wish is available at the school.

I have completed part of my course at school. Can I take that course at VLN and pick up where I left off?
Yes. You will need to make an appointment with one of our counsellors. Our counsellors will give you the appropriate forms for your counsellor and teachers to complete, telling us which parts of the course you have completed and the marks you received. The counsellor must return the form to VLN. If you are no longer attending school, we will also need a Transfer or Withdrawal form from your school. If you are taking this course and staying in school, we will still require that your principal sign your registration form.

Can I take a course over again to upgrade my mark?
Yes, you may retake a course to upgrade your mark.

If I take a course again, which mark appears in my transcript?
The course mark on your transcript will be the higher mark. If the course is provincially examinable, the higher provincial mark will be blended with the higher course mark, provided they were taken within one year.

Registration

How do I register for a Grade 10-12 online and/or print course?
  1. Students must register online for all online and print courses. You can begin the first step by going to the D2L External Self-Registration link.
    • If you already have a User Name and Password login and Self-Register.   If you cannot login or you have forgotten your login information, send an email to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please DO NOT create another user.
    • If you are NEW to the VLN chose I do not have a username and password and follow the prompts. You will then receive a User Name and Password that will log you into D2L.
  2. When you register you will choose a course Orientation class first. For example: Planning 10 Orientation Spring/Summer 2013.
  3. After you’ve registered you will have access to the Orientation class immediately. Scroll down the main page to your My Courses section. Here you will find a link to the Orientation class you registered into. For example: Planning 10 Orientation Spring/Summer 2013. You will have to complete an Orientation Assignment BEFORE you get access to the active course.
  4. Click on the Orientation class link and there you will find all the instructions you need to complete and submit the Orientation Assignment. Once it has been marked by your teacher you will be moved into the active class. This may take 2-3 school days.
    • For an online course the active course has all the information you’ll need to complete the assignments, submit work online, etc.
    • For print courses the active course is a place where you can see your grades, contact the teacher, etc. However your work is submitted in person or by mail.
  5. Once your Orientation Assignment has been marked, you will see a second link appear under your My Courses section which is for the active class. For example: Planning 10 Section1 Spring/Summer 2013.
  6. Do you need to pick up materials?
    • ONLINE: If your online course does not need any materials then you’re set to go. However if your online course needs you to pick up materials then you need to come into the VLN office to do so.
    • PRINT: All print courses have materials that need to be picked up. You’ll need to come to the VLN office to do so.
How do I register for a Grade 8-9 online and/or print course?

If you are a full-time student at the VLN you must make an appointment with your VLN counsellor to set up your program.  You can make an appointment by calling our office at 604-713-5520 or contacting your VLN counsellor directly.  Check out the Staff Contact link for details.

If you are attending a different school and want to take one or two courses with the VLN simultaneously you will need your home school's principal to complete the Registration Form.  Once it is filled in and signed you will need to bring it into our office.
