Description

Mandarin 12 is designed for students who have previous experience in Mandarin or have completed Mandarin 11. However, it is not designed for native speakers. The goal of this course is to further develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Through learning the Chinese language, students will also develop an appreciation for the Chinese literature, history and culture. Students are expected to have mastered the Hanyu Pinyin Romanization system. There is no textbook required for this course as all of the course materials are online.

Course Topics/Modules

Important Information about Mandarin 12

  • You must read the section before you start each module and work on the assignments. The course related information, useful resources, and Chinese writing resources will help you understand and complete the course successfully.

 

Module 1: Young People’s World 

  • Module 1 contains 6 lessons that talk about different topics relating to young people’s world, such as sports, entertainment, and so on.

 

Module 2: Festivals and Customs

  • Module 2 contains 6 lessons that talk about topics regarding Chinese and Western festivals.

 

Module 3: Travel

  • Module 3 contains 6 lessons that talk about topics regarding travelling.

 

Module 4: Chinese Literature

  • Module 4 contains 4 lessons that introduce Chinese literature in different periods.

 

Assessment

The Mandarin 12 course is graded as follows:

  • StartUp Assignment                                     5%
  • Assignments, project and oral presentation 30%
  • Participation (online discussions)                         5%
  • Online Quizzes                                       10%
  • Midterm                                                         20%
  • Final Exam                                                     30%
