Math 8


This is a self-contained, non-academic mathematics course based loosely based on the concepts introduced in the regular grade 9 Math course. This course is useful for students wishing to upgrade their basic skills or those who plan on taking Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 10 (A&W Math 10).


Course Topics/Modules

Module One: Arithmetic Review including basic operations, fractions, rational numbers, and integers, word problems.

Module Two: Decimal numbers, exponents, scientific notation, geometry measuring angles, perpendicular and intersecting lines triangles, right-angle triangles, square roots, and Pythagoras theorem area and volume measurements of basic polygons (Metric)

Module Three: Converting fractions to decimals, terminating, repeating, and irrational numbers. Skills with ratios. Language of percent, simple interest. Graphing points on a plane, linear equations. Working with probability. Introduction to algebra, expressions, terms, variables and coefficients, evaluating algebraic expressions

Exams: 40%

This paper based course does not require a textbook. It is highly recommended that students use or another of the many free Math sites.





Teacher Support

Students have access to the course teacher through email, phone and in-person.  However the phone is not the best option for explaining math problems.


This course can be used to fulfil a grade 9 Math course requirement and can be used as a prerequisite course for Apprenticeship/Workplace Math 10.
